Porter Dive Rescue
Team responds to Lake Michigan
At 3:42pm on Sunday, July 12th, the Porter
Dive Rescue team along with numerous other dive rescue organizations
responded to Kemil Beach in Beverly Shores for a report of a boy
missing. Porter Dive Rescue responded with 4 divers and 4 support
personnel.
Porter Dive Rescue deployed it's boat and towed 2
divers immediately after arriving on scene, but unsuccessful in locating
the boy. Other Dive Rescue organizations, including Portage, Burns
Harbor, Lakes of the Four Seasons, Crown Point, Lake County Aquatics,
DNR, with a few more, placed divers in the water immediately upon
arrival. Lake County Sherriff deployed sonar in hopes of locating the
boy but was unsuccessful. Diving continued until 6:02pm, when dive
operations were halted due to worsening tide conditions.
One of the PFD support personnel was treated for
hypothermia after a wave upset their boat and sent him into the water.
The firefighter was later released from St. Anthony Memorial Health
Center in Michigan City.
Dive operations continued the next morning and
continued all day to no avail.
The body of DaVante Jackson was recovered from Lake
Michigan by Department of Natural Resources officers at 10:22 a.m.,
three days after he initially went missing.
Chanell Davis, DaVante's mother, said via phone from
her Chicago Heights home she was relieved they found her son and that
the family has closure.
All swimmers are warned that Lake Michigan has proven
too many times that it is a dangerous place to swim.
